This interchange is a major gateway into Albuquerque’s South Valley and the Mesa del Sol community that serves approximately 50,000 vehicles per day, including heavy commuter and commercial truck traffic. When the project was initiated, the 45-year-old diamond interchange had significantly outlived its design life and had become increasingly congested and unsafe.

This 2.5 mile reconstruction project consisted of the removal of existing bridge structures and obstructions, placement of new asphalt, PCCP, curb and gutter, five bridge structures, retaining walls, drainage culverts, inlets and pipe, grading of detention ponds, 1 million yards of earthwork removal, earthwork grading, new traffic signals, traffic signing and striping, roadway lighting, ITS systems, and reconstruction of an existing railroad crossing. This multi-phase, multi-faceted project was completed early and within budget.
